When you hit middle age you really only have two choices: you can get fat and lazy until you roll over and die, or you can can get off your ass and do something, like maybe ride a bike.

Furiously Bad
Well, yesterday began fine weatherwise, but then the clouds rolled in... again, as did the sporadic thunderstorms. As I lay down to sleep last night, I could hear the patter of rain on my windows... again. For now, I think the rain has passed. We've got clouds scuttling across the sky, but the temps are mid Spring, down in the mid 50s (F). According to Accuweather, the next 5 days should be dry. I don't think anybody quite believes that will happen.
Most of yesterday morning and early afternoon was spent adjust the kbps on different chapters of the audiobook and more importantly the volume. Translation: I'm equalizing the decibel range. ACX (read Audible) requires what they call a standardized volume and all chapters need to fall into specific number of decibels. This can be done during recording, but unless you're in a sound studio it's rather difficult because, as humans, we tend to move our heads when we're speaking, we get a little closer to the microphone, or pull away the tiniest of bits. The changes I have to make are small, 1 decibel up, or possibly .8 decibels down. The only way to know how much to change is to upload the chapter, wait for ACX to analyze it, and then make that tiny correction before uploading it again. I'm using an app called Audacity, which simplifies the process. I should be finished either today, or tomorrow.
And I went to see the latest Mad Max movie last night. Avoid it at all costs. A very chiseled Chris Hemsworth is the villain and is Anya Taylor-Joy as the heroine. While they obviously go to the gym daily, no one else does, since the rest of the cast is overweight and either scared or missing body parts. There are long action set pieces and a few, short bits of dialogue that are intended to move the story... possibly forward. About 2 hours and 15 minutes into the two and a half hour long saga, you get a voiceover because someone, somewhere decided that the audience needed to know what was going on. This movie is a prequel to Mad Max - Fury Road (that film won 6 Oscars), so during the credits you actually get to see clips of that earlier, much better movie.

Millions of Voices
The big storm has arrived. Temps will stay between 45 (F) and 49(F) until further notice. Rain will be steady, though, as they're not predicting, on and off, which doesn't really make sense, but then we are talking about the weather. No matter which computer program you run the information through, there are always variations. The European models tend to be more accurate than the American models, at least as far as hurricane prediction, though this is not a hurricane, just one damn big rain storm.
Work was boring yesterday. Monday's usually are. I had some sales. One of my flooring customers is going to be coming in to purchase, but she didn't do it yesterday. That's about a $5000 sale. Management will be impressed. I also did something this morning that I thought I'd never do, I opened up my hours just a wee bit. I'm now available to work Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. That doesn't mean they will schedule me, but it does give me a few more hours a week. It is so quiet here at the house since Lily's gone, so this will help me to fill in those silent hours.
Another thing I did, was to send David, my narrator, an email putting off the audiobook until I get back from Greece. There are things I should have done prior to publishing The Body Under Ice as an audiobook, one being to listen to other narrators in other audiobooks. Simply hiring a narrator from an audition recording without educating yourself is not necessarily a mistake, but it does limit your options. This doesn't mean I'm changing narrators. Let's just say I'm opening up the field. There are a million voices out there, who's to say I won't find one that I feel more defines the characters of Eli and Max.
There are also other things I feel need to be prioritized, like getting The Body in Motion published, and, probably most important, start the actual writing process for The Body in History.
And, sticking to my usual practice, here is an artwork tease. I just love doing these.

Audiobook Retailers
Yesterday was odd. Many chores on the "to do" list were accomplished. Even a trek on the treadmill. Yet this morning when I checked out my blog I saw that I failed to respond to the comments. That's something I believe I've only done twice before in all the years I've been writing Riding On, so my apologies for being so lax.
We did have nice weather. We're supposed to get the same thing today, with the temps hanging around in the low 80s (F) with little to no humidity. Nice stuff for the end of August and early September. This Summer has been good for us here in Central PA. Perhaps it's because we're located in a valley between ranges of the Appalachian mountains.
I received an update yesterday from Findaway Books. The Body Under Ice is now available at the following audiobook retailers. This is probably going to stick out the side of the blog, but that happens sometimes. I am going to prep the first book in the series for audiobook since I should have started out with number 1, rather than number 6. That should be happening while The Body in Motion is being edited.

Chintzy
Yesterday was almost a day without rain... almost. We did get sprinkles around 7 last evening, though they didn't last long. The sidewalks were dry this morning when I left Lily out. I do see another mowing of the lawn ahead though, possibly on Friday. Today, supposedly, there is a 0% chance for precipitation... we shall see.
Both tanks were cleaned yesterday. Each one now has an algae eater, but only one tank has snails, too. The smaller tank in the living room is the home for several species of Barb (Golden, Cherry, and Tiger) and they, unfortunately eat snails, in fact they will eat just about anything they see as being weaker. They were very nosey about the algae eater at first, until he tried sucking algae from their bodies; they didn't like that so now they leave him alone.
I do get to work tomorrow for a full eight hours, so dinner tonight is going to be Swedish Meatballs, enough so I can use the leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
The process has been initiated for The Body Under Ice audiobook to be distributed on Audible. It will take about 45 days, and, being that they're cheap scuds, will only pay a royalty of 25% of every sale. Findaway, the publisher will get a 10% cut of that so in the end, I should get about $1.35. Other distributors pay 70% to 80%, to give you an idea of how chintzy they are.
If anyone is interested, I am on Instagram: drsnyderwriter. You get to see pictures of what I cook, the dogs, and the current work in progress.
There's a new video on my YouTube channel. Actually, it's posted in a number of places. Here's the blog version.

Great News!!
Yesterday was nice, sunny, not so humid and an enjoyable day. That didn't mean we didn't get our daily dose of rain, that happened overnight... and it's going to happen again today. Weather patterns are so difficult to predict, especially since we're in the beginning stages of Global Warming. We have no idea how fast or how extreme things will change. One thing that does seem to be certain is that here in the United States our southern states are going to get very hot.
My visit to That Fish / Pet Place yielded some blue mollies and plants, the main reason for my trek to Landisville. Later today I'm going to be ordering the last of the naked Greek statues for the big tank. They're made of marble and safe for the tank. Some of the plants I put in the living room tank and the fish rooted them up over night, so they'll go in the bigger tank where the fish are not so aggressive.
Yesterday, as I was driving back from Lancaster, I had an odd feeling right after I turned on to 283 West. It wasn't good, or bad, just that something had changed. Anyway, when I got home I put the bag of fish in the big tank to adapt to the new water temperature and went upstairs to check my email and found I'd gotten a response from Findaway Book distributors. The Body Under Ice is now available for purchase at any one of these distributors. Now, isn't this nice? I set up promotions on Spotify and Barnes & Noble, though I don't know when they will kick in. It's also available on Google Books, as well, but not on Audible. Audible requires you only sell through Audible and royalties are only 30% of the selling price.

Court Time
Thursday... and I have to work. There's a 40% chance of rain and we are, for all intents and purposes, mid-week, so I'm expecting our customer count to be really low. Traditionally, this is also vacation season. Families are supposed to be spending time together at the shore, or in the mountains, most of them wasting their hard earned dollars on things that are touristy in nature.
The angelfish that was sick, died yesterday, so now I'm down to two. He lived a long times (3 years), and got to be quite large, 5.5 inches from the tip of his top fin to the tip of his bottom fin. I'd say he probably had a fairly good life as far as fish go; they don't remember much. By now, all the other fish in the tank have forgotten him.
Lily, too, is getting old. She sleeps a lot. She'll be 10 years old in 2 weeks. My aim is to spoil her for the rest of her years.
After all of the hoopla of having The Body Under Ice getting turned into an audiobook, the bold email about it being available for distribution, I can't find it anywhere. I've emailed Findaway Books since this is not what they advertised. Their response was to start an internal inquiry. If I don't hear back from them soon, I'll see if I can make it available on Audible.
And, of course, this is going to be a very popular place this afternoon.

Congratulations
Well, we got more rain. The temp outside on this cool Thursday morning is hovering around the 59 (F) mark. A little reminder for those who missed it, we are in summer now. While weather forecasters are saying our temps will climb up into the 80s (F), at present there are no predictions about us hitting the sweltering 90s (F). Of course, I don't think I need to remind any of you that we are still young in the season. Give it a few weeks.
Since today is supposed to be drizzly, showery and overcast, there will be no yardwork today. Instead, the time will be dedicated to fun, inside activities, like the continuing saga of painting trim.
I'm nearing the 30,000 word mark on the next book. My guys have ordered their bikes for the early morning chase through the alleys of New York City... oh... dear... I may have given something away.
And last evening I received this email. I'm excited! My royalties get paid to Findaway, which takes a %, so there's no way I'm going to break the bank on this little endeavor. However, I suspect I will spend a little more time promoting the audiobook than I do with the ebooks. Promotion on Kindle can be very expensive and usually the only one satisfied with the returns is Amazon.

Shut Up, We're in Charge
Well, here it is, Friday already. Seems like just yesterday it was Tuesday and I was starting my mini-midweek break. I'd call it a vacation, or possibly a staycation because I wasn't working and didn't go anywhere, but I did do things. Like hang a door between the kitchen and the back porch. When I picked it up at the store, there was a white tail deer walking through the parking lot. I'd have taken a pic but my phone was in my pocket.
I'm going to cancel my subscription to Adobe since I don't use it. Originally the idea had been to use it to create the PDF files needed to publish paperbacks through Barnes & Noble, but since I'm moving into audiobooks the odds of that happening are slim. And, speaking of audiobooks, The Body Under Ice is complete. It's in the Review stage and unless problems are discovered should be available to purchase in 20 - 30 days. It will be available on a number of markets, including Spotify. It will be, however, on Audible because that platform require you sign a 7 year exclusivity contract. They also take a bigger chunk of your royalties, so audible is out.
So, I'm adding bands into my workout routine. Any guesses on how long it will take me to look like this?

Note This
Today is Tuesday and my four day weekly break has begun. I will be heading down to Lebanon shortly. Happily, most of the traffic will be heading into Harrisburg, rather than away from it. That's fine with me.
Yesterday we had rain. Lots of rain. Almost one full inch fell over the region so things are going to start greening up. I'm excited. I didn't hear one person complaining.
And while business at the store was slow, I did manage to get 3 measures. Management was happy. I didn't sell anything else, however, which meant for a long, boring day. I couldn't wait to leave.
Of course, when I did get home, it wasn't as though I had enough time to sit and play a video game. All of the audio chapters for The Body Under Ice have been uploaded. I've been taking lots of notes on things that need to be changed. Like how long the break for a comma, or for a period. Words that get pronounced oddly, or skipped. Chapters are not recorded in one sitting, but are actually recorded in bits and pieces which are then stitched together to make a whole. About 3 times that stitching is a bit rough and will need to be smoothed out. All of the song lyrics that I included in the book are being removed. They just don't work in an audiobook. In fact, this has been a great learning experience. I now know how much prep work needs to go into a manuscript before it gets recorded. Here are some of my notes.

Showering off our Nuclear Secrets
We did get some rain yesterday. A nice soaking shower for about a half hour early in the evening. Any day I don't have to stand out front watering my plants is a good day. I don't water the lawn, however, so that's nice and brown. There is little difference between the way it looks now and the way it normally looks in late July and August.
I ordered a small weight bench because... well, I gave the one I had away because I didn't think I'd ever use it again. Well, that proves how much I know. I'm also planning on cancelling my membership at Planet Fitness. I've been paying them $10 a month for almost 5 years (all through the Pandemic even though I didn't go). As usual, every spring and summer it gets inundated with teenagers and young adults mostly as a place to hang out with their friends. Usually, my attendance just drops, but this year I've decided to cancel. I can restart in the fall when they go back to school and college.
The recordings are flowing in thick and heavy for the audiobook. I emailed David telling him that most of the changes I had were editing, shortening the pauses between words. He's changed the phrasing in certain areas which works. It didn't take me long to realize that reading a book aloud is a lot different than simply reading it.
And yesterday I, as well as the rest of the world, got to see this.

Any Day Now
Yesterday was quiet. The weather was cool, only climbing into the the low 70s (F), and we had a steady breeze coming down from the north. They're calling for the same weather pattern today. Tomorrow rain is again in the forecast. We have an 80% chance of getting wet. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully it will wash some of the smokey haze away.
Speaking of the smokey haze, I understand today is supposed to be our worst. It is, at times, like fog. Unlike New York, where it's orange, ours is mostly gray.
I was talking to one of the men working on the house next door. He's told me it's almost time for it to be painted, inside and out. Gray. I hate gray.
The audiobook of The Body Under Ice is being uploaded by chapter. That's nice because most of the chapters are short, so time wise each is about 6 minutes long. That's probably also great for people who listen to audiobooks. Having to stop listening at the end of a chapter is great.
And of course, there's this:

The Unsaucy Truth about Meatball Ron
Well, Tuesday has come and gone. We're a number of hours into Wednesday now, and so far the day has been quiet. Temps are predicted to be nice today. Lots of sunshine is predicted. I love sunshine. At some time this morning I will need to drive over to my store to buy some weed wacker string. Had I known, I'd have picked some up on Monday and saved myself the trip. While there I'll pick up a can of primer. Yes, there is more painting needing to be done.
Production began yesterday on the audiobook. It will be completed in segments, each sent for my approval. We had discussion about the voices yesterday. I haven't heard his vocalization of Bobby Tussel yet, so that should be interesting. How do you sound like a man who has no filters because he has a bullet in his brain? I hope it's good. Readers like Bobby.
And, of course, because yesterday was so nice, more yardwork was accomplished. Of course, more would have been done if I hadn't run out of string for my weed wacker.
I made a BLT for dinner last evening. No toast. While I do like toast in general, I like my sandwiches to be made with bread, or rolls, or buns... anything but toast.

The Big News
Well, let's say hello to Monday morning. It's supposed to be warm and sunny today, and, of course, I am scheduled to work. According to the forecast, the weather's supposed to be nice for most of the week. That's nice. There's always yardwork to be done. There's a bush growing in front of the porch I need to cut back and possibly remove completely because, little did I know when I planted it, that it's considered invasive.
In spite of it being slow yesterday, I did manage to sell 2 floor measures. That should keep management happy. I made my goal for the week. Yippee. Otherwise it was slow, which meant for a long, boring day at the Flooring desk.
I do have some big news, something that will delight a number of you. My latest book, The Body Under Ice is being turned into an Audiobook. That's right. For those of you who would rather listen to Eli and Max as they drink their wine, this should be very good news. I'm working with a talented narrator named David Magadan (link to his website). A number of narrators auditioned, he nailed it on his first try. I suspect that's pretty rare after hearing so many different voices.
